Burgundy offers a multitude of tourist and cultural activities, such as the wonderful village of Sancerre with its breathtaking view of the entire surrounding valley and its incredible local wines. But not far from there are also the spectacular medieval construction site of Guédelon, the majestic castle of St Fargeau (and its famous annual historic spectacle), the magnificent city of Vézelay (classified as World Heritage by UNESCO since 1979, notably for its fabulous basilica, masterpiece of Romanesque art), the lovely medieval city of Auxerre, but also the fortified castle of Druyes-Les-Belles-Fontaines (and its medieval village with fortifications dating from the 11th century), the village of Rogny les Sept Ecluses (and its annual pyrotechnic show), the underground quarries of Aubigny, the castle of Ratilly (and its pottery workshop), the pottery village of Saint Amand en Puisaye (and its 16th century castle housing the Sandstone museum), the convent of Treigny (and its exhibitions of contemporary ceramics), the village of Toucy (and its jazz festival), the art brut museum of La Fabuloserie, and the historic village of Saint Sauveur en Puisaye, birthplace of the writer Colette, who offers to visit the Colette Museum (located in the village castle, dating from the 16th century) but also the birthplace house of the famous novelist (classified as a historic monument since 2011, it offers you a journey back in time, to meet the youth of the writer of "Claudine").
In St Sauveur, a dungeon dating from the 11th century, called "Saracen tower", and classified as a historic monument since 1996, overlooks the city. The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church, dating from the 12th century, built in ferruginous sandstone, is the pride of the village. City of character steeped in history, Saint Sauveur is also a lively village, with a rich and varied cultural and artistic activity. In fact, it hosts every year the “International Festival of Women's Writings”, “Nuits de St Sauveur” (contemporary music festival in the castle grounds), the musical festival “Comme ça chante”, the “Estivales de Puisaye"(classical music festival), the" Annual potters fair", the craft fair of" January 30", the artistic exhibition" Art in the courtyards and gardens" and the "Art festival"(exhibition works of art and concerts at the "Poetry" in the old brickyard of the village, an alternative place occupied by many active artists). Its typical Wednesday morning market offers a rich selection of regional and artisanal products.
Burgundy is a Mecca for gastronomy thanks to its proximity to numerous vineyards (Sancerre, Irancy, Chablis, Saint Bris), its selection of exceptional gourmet restaurants (offering traditional dishes such as snails, bourguignon beef, coq au vin or gougères) and its typical markets offering a rich selection of local cheeses and other local products (notably that of Toucy, elected "most beautiful market in Burgundy" in 2018 and nominated "most beautiful market in France" in 2019).
You and your children will be delighted to visit the educational farms in the region (St Fargeau castle farm, Vanneau mill farm) where you can rub shoulders with farm animals and learn more about peasant life in past centuries. You can also discover the Puisaye aboard the Transpoyaudin, a tourist train that walks the disused railway lines between Moutiers and Villiers-Saint-Benoît, via Toucy. In summer, many flea markets and garage sales take place every weekend in different surrounding villages.
But Burgundy is above all a wonderful green setting for lovers of nature and sporting activities. Its green hills provide an ideal setting for walking, on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. Its numerous hiking trails will make you discover a protected and wooded countryside, where you will come across many wild animals. The Lac du Bourdon offers a nautical base with many activities (paddle, canoeing, rowing, windsurfing), as well as a supervised beach where you can swim and paddle. You can also fish there, just like at the nearby Moutiers pond. Around the lake are also possible many sporting activities such as horse riding, tree climbing (at Boutissaint animal park), bungee jumping, balloon and microlight trips, golf, tennis, and even the cyclorail on the old railway. Don't wait any longer, Burgundy is reaching out to you!
